Forget the pool. Forget the beach. Some teens are trading in the surf and sand for a hammer and paintbrush.
More than sixty high school students from Wisconsin and Illinois are taking part in an annual week of service. This week the teens from Mount Olive Lutheran Church are making the rounds lending a helping hand all over the state. Thursday they stopped at The Neighbors Place in Wausau to build bed frames, unload trucks and paint.
High school junior Tristyn Newman has volunteered for years. She says there's no other way she would rather spend her summer.
"It's just a nice thing," Newman told NewsChannel 7. "It's like you'd want people to help you if you were in their situation and it's a good way to spread the word and it's just nice. You get to make new relationships and help people out."
Volunteers are spending the remainder of the week in Wausau, but will head to Colorado to do some volunteer work later next month
