Teens urge drivers to be safe and help save lives

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS -- Car crashes are the number one killer of American teens, causing more deaths each year than homicide, suicide and cancer.

Now, thousands of Texas teens -- including some here in San Antonio -- are gearing up for the "#GetThereSafe campaign, in hopes of encouraging everyone to be more careful on the road.

The campaign is being pushed during Global Youth Traffic Safety Month. It kicks off just in time for summer, which is the deadliest season on the roadways for teens.

"They're just driving off and they don't know what can happen to them," said local high school student Alyssa Gonzalez. "So, it's a really good thing that we keep our priorities set on keeping not only our students safe but the surrounding schools around us."

As the school year draws to a close, some Brackenridge High School students are spreading their message in hopes of keeping their friends and loved ones safe this summer.

"Whether you're a teenager or an adult, no matter where we go, we don't want people to be texting and driving," said Ashley Falcon, who attends Brackenridge. "Always wear your seat belt to get from one place to another without any harmful death to anybody."

During May, thousands of students across the country are gathering to raise a #GetThereSafe flag at their schools. The flag serves as a symbol of solidarity and is a reminder for teens to practice smart-driving behaviors every time they are on the road.

"It is the right thing to do ... and I feel good about it," said Falcon.

The Allstate Foundation is helping highlight the campaign and said, in addition to not texting and driving, just wearing a seat belt reduces wreck injuries by more than 50 percent.
