North Shore youth groups announce holiday drive to help homeless

Several local youth organizations are coming together this holiday season to bring wellness to dozens of individuals and families served by Chicago’s Night Ministry.

The Winnetka Youth Organization, Haven Youth and Family Services, Glencoe Youth Services and the Wilmette Warming House are teaming up to collect items for the needy during the 2013 holiday drive.

Now until Dec. 13 each organization will be collecting toothbrushes/toothpaste (small size), pairs of adult thermal socks, small first aid kits, small packs of tissues, full size deodorant, lip balm, hand cream, hand warmers, pairs of magic gloves, small memo pads and pens, assorted candy, chocolates, breath mints, gum, decks of cards, hats, gloves and long underwear.

The Night Ministry, a non-profit based out of Chicago’s north side, aims to provide services to those experiencing homelessness. Each year the Night Ministry works to ensure that every one of the individuals they work with know they are valued and cared for during the holiday season.

The group has enlisted the help of the local youth organizations to collect, organize and construct stockings full of essential hygiene and winter weather items to be distributed through the Night Ministry’s housing programs and on the Chicago streets through their outreach bus.

In Winnetka, items can be dropped off at the Winnetka Youth Organization located in the basement of the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Ave. Local teens will sort and pack the items into the stockings during a holiday youth celebration from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 13.

Items can also be dropped off at Glencoe Youth Services, 680 Greenwood Ave., the Wilmette Warming House, 1187 Wilmette Ave. and Haven Youth and Family Services at 825 Green Bay Road in Wilmette.

Questions can be directed to Winnetka Youth Organization Program Director Ross Bye at 847-446-0443 or by email at programs.wyo@gmail.com.
