The United Methodist Youth Group in Ellington hosted a movie at the church, Sunday evening, Nov. 3.
The name of the movie was “Mary and Martha.”
In the movie, Hilary Swank stars as Mary, an American interior designer. Brenda Blethyn stars as Martha, a British housewife. The two have little in common apart from the one thing they wish they didn’t.
When malaria strikes, the lives of these very different women change forever. They forge a deep friendship and embark on an epic journey of self-discovery to Africa, dedicating themselves to the cause of malaria prevention.
Beginning to rebuild their lives, they show how ordinary people can make a difference and inspire positive change in the process.
Enlisting the help of Mary’s estranged father, a former politico, the two women beseech both the powers that be and ordinary people to get involved, realizing a shared responsibility to all the world’s children.
The movie effort was part of the United Methodist Church’s worldwide “Imagine No Malaria” campaign which raises funds for combating malaria deaths in Africa through the purchase of nets that protect against the mosquitoes which carry the malaria virus.
Admission into the movie was free. The youth collected donations afterwards to send in to purchase mosquito nets to be sent to Africa.
The group raised $800. Every $10 buys a net and saves a life.
Fellowship afterwards with desserts, coffee and punch was enjoyed by all.
For more information on how to get involved or to give a donation, contact Youth Director Cassie Crocker.
