Teens reveal meaning of a best friend

FRESH INK is an education feature published twice a month in collaboration with the Valley Morning Star Newspaper In Education program and local teens. Middle and high school students reveal why a best friend is a best friend.

Why is your best friend, your best friend?

My best friend is my best friend because she has been there for me when I was in a depressed state and without her I wouldn't know where I'd be in this world today.

Raul Villela, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
The reason my best friend is my best friend is because I've known her for the longest time. I've known her since middle school when I met her in Spanish class. I trust her with all my secrets and she gives me the best advice when I need it. We're so close to each other and we're exactly alike.

Clarissa Astorga, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my best friend because she is the person who has showed me that true friends do exist. She is the one that is always there when I am feeling down. She is the person who comforts me, makes me laugh, smile and feel those butterflies in my stomach. We do all the crazy and stupid things best friends do.

Jonathan Longoria, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my best friend because I can relate to her in so many ways. She is that friend who is going to be by my side and share the happiest moments in life. I appreciate the little things she has done for me and I consider her my sister.

Oneida Guerra, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend and I have been friends since 6th grade. We have never been in an argument and we can hold a conversation for hours and hours without running out of stuff to talk about. We can talk about anything with each other.

Frank Rivas, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my best friend because she has helped me through everything. My best friend is my beautiful mother. My mother pushes me through the struggles I have. How do I know she's my best friend? Because she completes me and obviously knows everything about me.

Samantha Danielle Cavazos, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my best friend because we're a duet. We chill and go on double dates some times. We're best friends because we've been through a lot.

Manuel Sanchez IV, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
There are many reasons why my best friend is my best friend. For example, that best friend is always there for me during the good times and the bad times. He always supports me in everything, and I support him too. He keeps secrets between us. I know that I can trust him with anything and I also know that if he had to take a bullet in the chest for me he would.

Rolando Ramirez, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
Before I even met my best friend, we were both young men seeking God from an early age. We were both part of the school football team and the same class. When I first visited my youth church, he was the only teammate going there. I noticed we had a lot in common. We were both football players seeking God and His kingdom. Little did I know we were going to become really close friends. His name is Jonathan Guzman.

Jesse Ibanez, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my sister Raquel. She understands me more than other people do. We spend so much time together that we even think the same; it's awesome to have a person who "gets" you when you're the odd ball. My sister is my best friend, and we love hanging out together. We would take a bullet for each other and we'll stick together through thick and thin. I love my best friend.

Virginia Moreno, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my cousin, Marisol. She is my best friend because she has always been there to support me especially now that I'm going through my parents divorce. She's the person I can call at any time and she will be there.

Yareslly Zuniga, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my girlfriend because she is the only one I express my feelings to. I tell her if and why my day is going bad. I can tell her about the problems that are going on in my house and she tries to help me in any way she can. She never puts me down and is always there for me no matter what the situation. She is the one I can count on to be there for me anytime.

Edgar Trevino, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my boyfriend. Even before we started dating I knew he would be the one I could always run to when I needed someone to talk to. We fight like cats and dogs but we get over it just like best friends do. I can tell him everything and anything, from personal things to just silly gossip. I'm comfortable around him and can act myself without being embarrassed or ashamed. He's my happiness when a stormy cloud is over my head. I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world.

Alyssa Nicole Escamilla, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my best friend because we have been together since fourth grade. We would hang out all the time during school and after school too. He is like a brother to me. Our friendship is something that will never be broken.

Felix Arizpe, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is always there for me. Whenever I need somebody to talk to she is there to hear me out and give me advice. We are best friends because of the things we have gone through and experienced together.

Leonardo Rios, San Benito High School, Teacher: David Means
My best friend is my best friend because he is the person I get along best with. He is the one that is always there for you in a good day or a bad day.

Jesus Gomez, Veterans Memorial Academy, Teacher: Benjamin Watt
My best friend is my best friend because we like to play the same sports, workout and both of us want to be a San Benito Greyhound. I’ve known my best friend for 13 years. My parents and his parents are best friends. We both have big dreams of playing in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys. We love to play football and work best when we are together.

Mark Cantu, Veterans Memorial Academy, Teacher: Benjamin Watt
My best friend is my best friend because she cares about me. She makes me happy when I’m sad. We both like to play soccer and like the same music. We go out to eat and to the movies together. She has been my friend since 1st grade. She always stands up for me and she always is there when I need her.

Pedro Abreu, Veterans Memorial Academy, Teacher: Benjamin Watt
I think my best friend is my best friend because she is always there when I need her. She gives me good advices and I know she loves me the way I love her like a true friend.

Karen Ramirez, Veterans Memorial Academy, Teacher: Benjamin Watt
My best friend and I can talk about anything, that’s why we both have been getting along since the first day of school. We talk to each other about the feelings and things we are going through.

Hector Benavidas, Veterans Memorial Academy, Teacher: Benjamin Watt
My best friend is my best friend because I know I can trust them with my secrets. I know they will always be there for me whenever I need them.

Roberto Trevino, Veterans Memorial Academy, Teacher: Benjamin Watt
My best friend is my best friend because she is always with me when I need her for something. When I go to a party she goes with me and she is like my sister

Alondra Chavez, Veterans Memorial Academy, Teacher: Benjamin Watt
My best friend is my best friend because she is good to me and she supports me in the good things and the bad. She is always a part of my life.

Cinthia Alvarado, Veterans Memorial Academy, Teacher: Benjamin Watt
My best friend is my best friend because that person likes the same things that I do and likes the same food that I do as well. He is not my best friend just because he likes the same things as I, but also because he is nice and kind and we hardly ever fight. We both like ice-cream, and enjoy pasta. We are also very generous and helpful.

Michael Durant, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
I have many friends, but only a few of them are the most caring, trusting, and honest. Those are my best friends. My best friend would have to be caring; they would worry about me because they care. Every day they would be asking if I was okay or if there was something wrong. They would also back me up when I’m in a difficult situation. And every day we would help each other because we care. My best friend would also be trusting. I would have to trust her and she would have to trust me. We would trust each other to do anything like keeping each other’s things safe. Most of all, my best friend would be honest, and all the time. I think that honesty is the first priority between best friends. It is important to stay true to each other and to never lie. Because lying would just break the friendship between the best friends.

Kayla Ellorimo, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
I have many friends, but they are all different, in a good way. They all have something in common, which is that they are trustful and caring. When I think of my friends, I think of how smart and loving they are. My friends would care about me; they would try to cheer me up when I was sad. They would help me get back up, and I would also help them. My friends are more like family to me, because we are there for each other. I love my friends just how they are.
Jazmin Saenz, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck

I only call them a “best friend” if I trust them. Even if you get in fights you will always get back together somehow. I am very picky about friends. If you like video games and anime. If I trust you enough to the point where I know you won’t talk about me behind my back. But so far I only have 4 best friends and one of them is of course God. That is my meaning of a “best friend.”

Joshua Navarro, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
The reason my best friend is my best friend is because I can trust them and I love them. You really don’t have one best friend because most of the people you know are your best friend. I have like 12 best friends and like 3 friends. I call them friends because I really don’t know them that well. When I was younger I had a best friend; he was the only one I got along with because he understood me. But now I have more.

Justice Torres, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
The reason my best friend is my best friend is because he makes me laugh. We like to share jokes with each other. We sometimes make fun of each other, but that’s okay. We share the same interests. He even introduces me to new things.

Carlos Lopez, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
When I think of a friend I think of someone you can trust, and someone who will never leave your side. A friend to me is someone you always like to be around and never gets bored being with them. A friend is not someone who turns their back on you, or someone who is not trustworthy. You can have many different kinds of friends which is unique. Last of all, friends should be the ones who care for you when you are sick and pick you up when you fall.

Nia C. Cerda, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
When I started school at Saint Anthony School I did not remember a lot of people, except one. She understood me and let me in; I felt welcomed. She liked the way I was, and we are exactly the same. Well not exactly but we love a lot of the same stuff. For example we both love sports and we enjoy spending time together while our parents work. These are a lot of reasons why she is my friend and no matter if we get separated because she is my friend.

Crystal Espinoza, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
The reason my best friend is my best friend is because he always cheers me up when I am sad. He is in the same activities I am in and he helps me improve myself when I can do better at it. He is always there for me when I am hurt or I need help with something else. I have known him for a long time and he has always been there for me whenever I need help at something even when he is doing something else.

Joshua Loya, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
Why my best friend is my best friend is quite simple actually because me and my best friend have the same qualities. For example me and him like to have a good laugh, both of us have a great sense of humor, and we love to play Minecraft on the PC. It is our favorite game that we play right after school. We also love chocolate flavored ice cream. Sometimes we just like to go outside and play basketball or sports. Those are some of the qualities that both I and my best friend have.

Daniel Saucedo, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
For one thing, I know who my best friend is. She is my best friend because on the first day of school, she was new and had no friends. She was from China and didn’t speak English. I told my mom about her after school and she told me to try to be friends. I had already tried, but she didn’t speak English. So I taught her English and she taught me some Chinese. We always agree on everything. From that day forward, we’ve been best friends.

Madison Harris, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
My best friend is my best friend because he is awesome, nice, and could keep secrets. I like friends that are like that. He always got my back no matter the situation. He always sticks to my side. Whenever I tell him a secret he keeps it. He is like a lock. You can’t open it unless you have the key.

Lorenzo Rodriguez, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
My best friend is my best friend because I can rely on him/her, and vice versa. My best friend can aid me in my schoolwork, help locate an important document, or just talk about politics and reality television. But what is friendship without a little friendly competition? I can always e-mail to my best friend an image of an accomplishment or a link to a record of winnings.

Aaron Vidaurri, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
My best friend is my best friend because they always help me when I am down and when I go through a tough time they comfort me. They are sad when I talk about Austin because I’ll be moving there next year. They helped me to become who I’m today, they give me the comfort to be funny around them, and they help me in so many different ways that pave the way that is my life. They always make me laugh and I enjoy spending time with them. And I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

Seth Allen, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
I have a lot of friends but a couple of them are my best friends. I choose my friends wisely; I look for someone who will let me be myself when I’m around them. At my school there are not a lot of people to choose from because the school is small. My best friends are my best friends because they know the real me. They know what I act like when I’m not around the people that I’m not close to. Strangers think I’m quiet, my friends think I’m outgoing and my Best friends think I’m Crazy. I can trust my best friends. If you think you found a best friend and you can’t trust them, then that’s not your best friend. Trust takes years to build, seconds to break and forever to repair. If you haven’t had friends, you haven’t lived. My best friends and I do crazy things. If we did those crazy things with friends, they would probably think you’re weird. The crazy things we do would be play basketball at night or run up and down the halls at your house yelling things that you understand with your best friend and no one else knows. Best friends have jokes that they understand but other people don’t. I’m glad to have my best friends in my life. They help me through things that I didn’t know I could get through.

Kaylee Debois, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
In my opinion, friends are people that you enjoy spending time with and like to discuss similar interests and opinions, but best friends are much more. Best friends are people that you can depend on, people that you can trust. My best friend has always been able to make me laugh when I’m down, talk to me when I need someone to talk to, and vice versa. She shares similar interests with me that we enjoy talking about, and though we have many differences, we love each other’s company. My best friend is one of those people that I can tell anything to, that I feel comfortable being myself around. We always love to write stories together, and she was the one that inspired me to write in the first place. We share similar interests in authors and television programs and we enjoy each other’s company.

Jackie Magno, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
Friendship is a special relationship you have with other people that are compatible to you. Now with all these people you call friends, you have this one special guy or gal that you just favor. You pick this one person that you have an even deeper friendship with, and then you just do things with them that you wouldn’t want to do with anyone else. I connected with my best friend through sports. We both joined volleyball in the 5th grade and from there we spent a lot of time together. I found out that she’s loyal, smart, funny, and fun to be around with. Both of us decided that our ultimate goal would be to become beach volleyball partners and play in the Olympics. We made friendship official on my 11th birthday when we both wore our bacon BFF necklaces that I still own as of today.

Angelica Montes, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
I think that I’m best friends with people because we share the same interest. For example I love the same television shows as my friend. We both love to swim. I love going over to their house to watch movies and sleepover, and mostly because you know you can trust them. You can tell them your secrets and you’re confident that they won’t tell anyone. You both sing the same songs, and laugh at the same jokes. Really it’s just how well you like them, and if you think they’re really cool and fun and you want to hang out with them.

Mary Kate Holder, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
My best friend is really funny and nice. He always does things with me like go to the movies or just hang out. We started playing basketball a lot together. I also have and another best friend. We hang out a lot and play games together. We all hangout together and it just feels awesome that you know you have best friends that will be there for you and stand up for you no matter what happens. We are all there for each other. We can trust them for things that you don’t want other people to hear. We play sports together and do activities together. We are a group and we stay as a group no matter what happens.

Raymond Cavazos, St. Anthony Catholic School, Teacher: Sonia Hilsenbeck
The reason why my best friend is my best friend is because we can do the craziest and most stupid things together and we don't even care if the world is watching us! Our humor is like no other and we crack up over the weirdest things that no one laughs about. For example she makes weird noises or voices out of the blue. Sometimes I will be laughing so hard and I will try to say something, but no words come out; it’s as if she knows what I am going to say. There are times I am having a bad day, in desperate need to talk to someone, and she’ll be there with a lending ear. She is amazing at giving good advice about how to deal with rude people or how to ignore them. This friendship has lasted a long time and I hope we’re still friends at least until adulthood.

Katherine Campos, Early College High School, Teacher: Dena Poppe
My best friend has supported me through so much. I can always count on her. I’ve known her since the fourth grade, but we didn't truly become best friends till seventh grade. She knows me inside and out. She knows my hopes, my dreams, and even my nightmares. I've made it this far through my life, because she's there for me when I'm down in the dumps and when I’m high in the sky. I can count on her to always be by my side. When my brother passed she was there for me, and I can trust her with everything and anything. Sure, sometimes we fight about stupid things like money, but of course we fight--we are best friends. She's my better half and I hope our friendship will last forever, because she means more to me than anyone can understand.

Sam Capetillo, Early College High School, Teacher: Dena Poppe
I cannot say there is just one best friend in my current life; there are many. Each best friend serves all and different purposes. For instance, we always spend time together and we all know each other’s story. However, each one of my best friends has a different personality which keeps me sane through difficult times. They are my best friends because they are extraordinary people that make my smile last hours, if not days.

Narda Garcia, Early College High School, Teacher: Dena Poppe
My best friend and I are best friends because we have many similarities. We both like the outdoors, and we get each other’s jokes. Regardless of the situations we are put through, we are always there for each other no matter what happens. If I have problems she will try her best to help me or console me. She is the type of friend that if I call her at 3:00 in the morning she will answer and ask “what's wrong?” I can honestly say that she is like my sister. We are like two peas in a pod--we do everything together.

Jackie Gudino, Early College High School, Teacher: Dena Poppe
I would say that my best friend isn't my best friend, but my incomparable sister. I know we're really close and inseparable because no matter how much time we've been away from each other we always talk as if we've always been around each other. Sometimes school changes our schedules and we aren't able to see each other, but we still remain united. She always makes me laugh and I'm really indebted for her always being there when I need some sort of comfort and consolation.

Melissa Lerma, Early College High School, Teacher: Dena Poppe
There was a time where we drove back to my best friend's house and I had a bright idea to go off-roading to get to his house and we seriously almost flipped over right in front of his house. There have been many adventures I've had with my best friend. Once we had to escape a strange looking alley from an odd looking person. We ran down a couple of blocks to escape the odd person. Why we were running away? Well, maybe because of what we did to him; we dropped his food. Those are just memories waiting to be shared all over again with my best friend.

Kaz Ra Martinez, Early College High School, Teacher: Dena Poppe
I personally do not have a best friend. There isn't someone in particular I'd run to if I needed something or needed to talk out my problems with. Sure there are people who come around and you can talk to them at school or work every day, but that's where the friendship ends. I don't have someone from school that I see on the weekends or vacations. Most people I meet, we only know each other a few weeks and we become strangers again. There shouldn't be someone who knows everything about you or all your secrets, since people don't stick around your lifetime. Those secrets shared wouldn't be guaranteed to be secrets forever. It's nice to have people to laugh with once in a while, but not to keep around. If my own parents don't know every detail of my life or what I think about things, I don't think a random stranger should have the privilege to know everything and expect me to trust them with my life. For now and forever, I am my own best friend.

Meaghan Valladares, Early College High School, Teacher: Dena Poppe
She shines in everything I don’t, with a personality that cares for me. I see her flaws, she sees mine, and with honesty we make each other better people. We talk and we smile, we walk and we sing, and we sit and we dance; but most importantly, we laugh, laughing in a manner that happens only when our humorous minds act together. That’s what makes her a best friend.

Alejandra Valverde, Early College High School, Teacher: Dena Poppe
When someone asks me why my best friend is my best friend I don't really know how to respond. To me, a best friend is someone who knows all your flaws and loves you anyways. It’s someone who picks you up no matter how many times you fall. A best friend will laugh when you say something that's not funny so you can feel better about it. A best friend is someone who you may not see in days and pick up talking like they were never gone. I have a few friends that this describes two of them actually. We are inseparable.

Audrey Fann, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
A best friend is not someone who will give or buy you whatever you want. A best friend is someone to not necessarily give you a three-dimensional gift. Instead, they give you something greater that you might not visually see, but that will last forever... the friendship that you have. We fight, we laugh, we eat together. But I know that no matter what happens, no matter how many fights we get into, she will always be there for me. And that is why she is my best friend till the very end.

Miranda N. Torres, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
I honestly really don't know why my best friend is best friend anymore. We've been friends for three years already and I never really figured why. We probably just ended up friends in the end for no reason, but if I think back hard enough and try to remember, it was because she was there when no one else was. A shoulder to cry on, a friend to have my back, someone to talk to. We were there for each other when no one else was.

Elisabeth Villarreal, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My buddy means so much to me. She's my best friend because together our coolness involves obsessive fangirling over boybands and blogging.

Sydney Walters, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend for tons of reasons. She understands me and I could talk to her about anything. We can fan girl about boy bands we love and share secrets. My best friend also helps me to remember to do FRESH INK. Those are some reasons why she's my best friend.

Kassandra Villarreal, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
What makes my best friend my best friend is not ever because of what she has or by what she does on her own. But because of what she is willing to do for me: She listens to me. She listens to me as I listen to her, and it's just enough to know that we mean a lot to each other; being with me and finding our ways through the depths of our hard times and skipping merrily through our fields of happy memories, we continue to listen and put up with each other, and follow through on this unbreakable bond which we share. My best friend is my best friend because of the love that we share.

Elizabeth Villarreal, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend would be my mom. My mom is always there for me when I need someone, she is a caring mother. My mom is not only my best friend but she is like a said that I never had. The only person that understands me and trusts me is my mother. That is why she my best friend.

Gabriela De La Cruz, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because we both have had each others back since 2nd grade. He has always been then there when I needed him the most. When my family was going through some tough money problems, he was there to help us. We've had our misunderstandings, but the best part of our friendship is that we protect each other and are honest to each other. If someone is bullying him, I step in to defend him and have always done it till today. He is and will continue being my best friend till the day I die.

Arnold Arias, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because she is the complete opposite of me yet the exact same. No matter the situation, she is always the first one to me there for me with her contagious smile. She has been my best friend since the third grade, meaning that we have been through rough times and back with each other. Even though at times I feel like punching her in the face, at the end of the day I thank God for putting such a wonderful person in my life.

Anna Valdez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
Besides my family I have never met someone whom I can trust with all of my secrets and wildest dreams. I fear that if I allow myself to open up to someone I will be as vulnerable as a turkey during Thanksgiving. Vulnerability is not exactly something I enjoy. In my eyes, the saying "a dog is a man's best friend" holds it's truth. That is why I choose my Maci Lou. The cutest miniature schnauzer anyone has ever laid eyes on. This little lady leaps for joy the moment I walk through the door. Her presence soothes me and makes me feel all kinds of happiness. She is a loving creature who will never betray me or anyone for that matter. She comforts me when I need it and always chooses to be by my side. I love my little Maci Lou, and she loves me too.

Ashley Cruz, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
The reason why my best friend is my best friend is because she understands me like no other person could. She the person I feel most comfortable with, that I could vent to, laugh with, have fun with, be weird, and do things I would normally be embarrassed to do in public. For example, if I need to pass gas I'll go right on ahead and we would just laugh about it unlike if we were in public and I would be holding it in for hours. Another reason why is because she knows me so well, she knows all my many faces and she can tell each one apart, If I'm mad, jealous, or sad she knows, But another reason why is because I don’t have to worry about being all those things because I can always count on her to put a smile of my face. I can always count on her, even if she's thousands miles away at the Bahamas or she's two inches away from me. We bang heads on everything, in other words, were just like each other, and think just like each other, and it's something I cherish and want to keep forever.

Brian Guerra, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend and I have been friends since 5th grade. I met her on a school field trip. She sat behind me on the bus, I said a joke, she laughed, and we instantly hit it off. Since then, I've trusted her with all of my darkest secrets, all of my embarrassing stories, and with all of my heart. She and I together is a quite troublesome combination but I don't know what I'd do without my partner in crime. She is one of the few great people I've met in my life and it is truly a blessing.

Samantha Sanchez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is a very special person in my life. She's the first person I go to when I need someone to talk to, and she listens and understands me. My best friend is my best friend because when I'm sad, she will do anything possible to cheer me up. She understands me when no one else can. She listens to me when no one else does. But most importantly, she's there for me when no one else isn't. She's someone I can trust and rely on. I know I can count on her for anything.

Nataly Guerrero, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
I don't have an exact best friend but rather a group of friends that I'm very close to, and they're my best friends because they're similar to me and overall great people who make good choices.

Pedro Sandoval, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because she is the best person in the world. My best friend is my sister, my mom, my personal lunch lady, my teacher, my therapist, and my friend. She is the person I'm the most comfortable with, and the one who has seen the real me. She brings out the best of me and I love her because of that!

Miranda Peña, Weslaco High School, Teacher Dr. Jean Bovee
“A friend is someone who can see the truth and pain in you even when you are fooling everyone else.” My best friend is like no other; she is the perfect combination of me and what I wish I could be. Every day that goes by I thank God for allowing me to find her. She has the ability to help me out of my own troubles and treats me like if she was feeling it too. I don’t consider her my best friend but like a sister, I couldn't ask for anyone better. My biggest fear is of losing her but I know our friendship is one to last forever. She is unique in any way, she clearly understands me from inside and out and many tend to say we look a like. We tend to say we were destined to be sisters but God wanted us to find each other and that's what makes her my best friend.

Priscilla Sandoval, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my mom because she always listens to me and corrects me from right and wrong. Many best friends backstab there friends but my mom will never do that. She's not only my best friend but she's also my sister that I never had.

Keila Garza, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
There are so many reasons I hang out with the people that I hang out with. They're really great people and we all have many things in common, but, of course, my best friend stands out a bit more. I've known my best friend since we were in 1st or 2nd grade. We both rode the bus and we live three houses down from each other. I don't exactly remember how we first met, but I'm glad it happened. She is such a great person. She picks me up when I'm down and never fails to make me laugh. When I don't know to whom to turn to, I know I can count on her. She gives me great advice and always keeps me motivated. She’s like a sister to me. I love my best friend for many reasons, but that fact that she's so caring, super witty, crazy smart and all around incredible makes her my best friend and me a very lucky individual.

Julieza Flores, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
We’ve had been friends since the first day of kindergarten. I remember making a deal with her to be friends no matter what had happened. Even though we appear to be so different we still get along with each other and I appreciate that about our relationship. She brings a positive view of the world no matter how pessimistic my views become, and I appreciate her so much in my daily life. She is also my best friend because she has always stuck by my side, and she never left me. She is what I call a truly remarkable person when you get to know her on the inside.

Sidney M. Ramos, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
I’ve had many friends in my life, but there's one that has stayed all along. I met her in junior high. We're total opposites. She’s bold, and fearless, but responsible, trustworthy and big hearted. She has been there through thick and thin. I can count on her on everything because she has proved to me. She knows all about me and still supports me. I don't worry about anything because with a friend like her nothing will ever go wrong. I could go on and on about why she is my best friend. Not only my best friend but one of the most important things in my life.

Michelle Claudio, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
What makes my best friend my best friend is that he's always there for me to comfort me even when he can’t be there physically. He's my best friend because we've gone through so much and despite everything we went through; he still chose to not see me any differently. He is someone that I can count on no matter what happens, and I'm just so thankful to get to have my best friend in my life. Not only is he kind but he's the most supportive person I know.

Clarissa Rodriguez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
To be honest, food is my best friend. It’s always there for me when I need it. It supports me and gives my energy. I love food and food loves me. We have a better love story than twilight. In sickness and in health, it's always there.

Amy Pedraza, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
I believe my best friend is music. I can be having a horrible day, and it helps me manage my emotional state. In our society, it’s hard to make friends who can make you feel comfortable telling them your personal thoughts. When it comes to music, you can express yourself and all your thoughts go away.

Jasmine Galvan, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My boyfriend isn't just my boyfriend but he's also my best friend. Before we became an item we were really good friends who later decided to date, but even then he never stopped being my friend. There are many reasons as to why he's my best friend but the most important one is the fact that he's always there for me no matter what.

Maria Morales, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because she cares about me. She tells me when I am doing something wrong, and she corrects me. I know I can always count on her when no one else seems to stick around. She watches over me as I watch over her. In many ways, she's like the little sister I have always wished for. We're really different, but what I think that makes us best friends is that, at the same time, we're a lot alike.

Jovanna Gonzalez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is also my girlfriend. I have gotten so attached to her, there is so much that I adore about her. She helps me out with school work, sports, or basically anything that I need help on. She has been a great best friend and I thank God each day for giving me the opportunity to have her by my side.

Jason McClenahan, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
Having a best friend is an extraordinary feeling. I can tell her any problems whether it's about my love life, school related problems, or family issues. I trust her as much as she trusts me. She's my best friend because she stands out from the rest and I feel comfortable and happy with her.

Estrella Rodriguez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because she understands me, and is there through my heartfelt & frustrating times. She knows me more than I know myself. She guides me away from bad decisions, and drives me towards better ones. She's a sister to me, and the most wonderful best friend I could ever ask for.

Maribel Villarreal, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
The reasons my best friend is my best friend is because I can tell him anything and he won’t tell a soul. He plays all the sports I play as well. I’m usually always with him on and off the field and court. His parents take real good care of me when I go over. We also do a lot of things when we go out with our other friends. Going from place to place, not knowing what we’re going to do next. I live for those nights, and I get those nights whenever I’m with my best friend.

Erik Gonzales, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is beautiful inside and. We met in 6th grade and from then on our relationship grew. We join sports, clubs, and meet new friends together. Our personal problems stay amongst us. I've never trusted anyone this much in my life. I appreciate her always being here for me when I fall, she picks me back up every time.

Isabella Ibarra, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because he plays football and baseball with me. He’s been my friend since we were both little. We played little league baseball and football together. He always helps me with my problems and I always help him. He gives me relationship advice and I teach him how to talk to girls. We’ll probably be friends till the day we die.

Joey Ceballos, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
Friendship is a powerful thing that is only built upon by years of being with another person. When two people have been together for a long time a special kind of bond brings them together which makes them best friends. That is how my best friend and I are so close to each other. Cherish your friends; make them know you appreciate them. Some day you may become best friends, and you will be happy with just the mention of their name.

Andrew Davis, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because he buys me Gatorade, when I forget to tell my mom to bring me one. He is also my best friend because he has my back no matter what happens to me. I really trust my best friend and I can see that he trust's me. Your best friend has to be with you until you die no matter what you do.

Luis Ramirez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
A best friend is the greatest kind of friend you could have. Having that special friend with the title of being your best friend is probably one of the greatest feelings ever. My best friend is my best friend because I can sincerely ask for advice and ask him personal questions knowing that he will take it in a positive manner and not mistreat me about it. We can laugh at each other knowing that it doesn't really matter the situation and not get upset at each other because of the great bond and relationship I have with him. I'm glad I have my best friend because I see him not only as a great friend, but a brother... and because he buys me food.

Eliezer Rodriguez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend simply for the fact that we have each others backs. No matter what situation we're in, we're always there for each other.

Matthew Cavazos, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
Friends are easy to come by, but best friends only come but once in a lifetime. I have a friend who I have known since birth. We have been through the best and worst times together, and share a bond that I can't share with any of my other friends. Being best friends is being able to know exactly what the other person is thinking. It's being able to spend days at a time with each other and still be sad to separate. Having a best friend isn't like a friendship it's more like a love, going from friendship to brotherhood.

Vance Ellis, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
It's crazy to think how 5 years later, my and I would have grown inseparable. The funniest thing about her is that the day we met, she thought I was totally and completely crazy. She has always been pretty mature, and she's a tough cookie to make laugh. She didn't get any of the jokes I told her, and she looked at me as though I had come from another planet. I wasn't too sure how we would get along at that point, but then something awesome happened: she looked at me with her serious eyes and, although it took a while, burst out laughing. She had the most contagious laugh and it was unstoppable. And if that weren't enough, she said the lamest jokes back at me which made me laugh harder. It was at that moment that I knew I had made a best friend, and I can't thank her enough for making me laugh when I'm sad, or just making me laugh in general. Laughter is the key to a long, happy life, and I hope she sticks around long enough to make each and every day that much more fun.

Jacqueline Cantu, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because she's been there with me for so long and knows me so well. There are times where we may lack communication due to busy schedules and no available contact but when we do get to catch up on things, it's as if we never stopped speaking. She's been there since fourth grade and she knows so much about me that it is actually quite amazing. I can be my absolute and complete self around her and know that she won't judge me; she'll just love me even more than she already does. She's there for me through my struggles and shows me guidance when I am in deep need of it. My best friend is my best friend for many reasons but the main and number one reason she is my best friend is because she is simply the best. I could never thank her enough for that.

Serena Stubbs, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is someone that I share a lot in common with like, same interests and some similar dislikes too. He knows when I'm joking and me with him. We also knows when not to go too far; there must also be a spark of rivalry between us pushing ourselves to best the other. This is where differences actually help out; after all you always try to be the best out of your friendship at something. A good friend also knows when there's something wrong with the other and tries to fix their problem or at least try and make the situation better for them.

Eduardo Ramos, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because we understand each other just by simply looking at each other. My best friend is the first person I think about when I make plans. She is the first person I go to when I need someone to talk to. When I'm sad my best friend will try her hardest to cheer me up. My best friend is my best friend because we are the exact same way yet so different at the same time.

Layla Garces, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
I do not have a best friend because having a best friend means that I will lose them later in life. I used to have best friends when I was younger and happier, imagining things around us and having fun. But as kids grow, they lose their imagination, their love for life, even their happiness, and their friends because they change. The best friends drift away to their own friends who suit them better, and while one tries to follow and be friendly, they eventually drift away from the other best friend too, alone once again. Ultimately, I don't have a best friend because it means that I'll lose them when we both drift apart, and I don't want that to happen to me again.

Robert Ozias, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
Best friends don’t necessarily mean you have to be from the same gender. It’s the person that's stuck by your side no matter what oppositions came through. It's about who was there for you when no one else was. And it's about who's always had your back no matter the circumstances. We have had our ups and downs but there isn't a day where I wouldn't be there for him.

Monika Garcia, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend, because she has always been there for me. Since day one. We tell each other everything and anything. I trust my best friend with all my heart; I would not trade my best friend for anything in the world. I hope that in the future we will still be best friends and have the same bond that we have today, and that our friendship continues to grow as we get older.

Daela Martinez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
A best friend in my opinion is someone willing to go anything with you. Someone whose willing to share experiences with you that nobody else could. Someone who understands you even when you don't explain yourself. That's why my best friend is my best friend. We can have a conversation, and even if we don't finish what we're saying, we know what we're talking about. My best friends and I have a unique friendship in the sense that no matter what happens; we always stand up for each other. We are always there to lend a helping hand even if we don't agree with what the other is doing. We are there for consolation, help, support, and most of all to love one another.

Jascara Villarreal, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because even though we fight we can't stay mad at each other for long. The longest time we have been mad at each other is about 6 hours. Even though we tease each other we really don't mean anything by it, that's just the way we are. She's there for me when I need her companionship, discreteness, and her trust. She's like my sister I really don't know what I would do without her.

Annahi Fuentes, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
The reason why my best friend is my best friend is because I can always count on her whenever I need someone to talk to. She has always helped me out on anything that I need, any problems I have, or whenever I just want to hang out. She has helped through all hard moments that I have been through, giving me advice, giving me her shoulder to cry on. I can tell her all my secrets and know that she will understand them.

Marisol Fuentes, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
First off my best friend is my best friend because she is the best. My dog Cameron is the best pet in the world and I couldn't have asked for a better companion. She is always with me and it's hard when I have to leave her for school in the morning. I treat her like my best friend and even my sister because of how important she is to me. I have had her since I was six years old and at this moment I am 15. She is like my go to girl. She obviously can't help me through situations, but she always knows how to put a smile on my face no matter what happens or what is going on in my life during that time. Sure she's not the kind of best friend anyone would expect, however, she has a special place in my heart and always will.

Adrienne Vega, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
I've never had a best friend, everyone is just acquaintances because in my perspective, nearly everyone will leave your life eventually and you will have to do it all on your own someday. So in my personal opinion, there's no real reason for a best friend.

Josue Jimenez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend and I have so much in common! From our music taste to how we dress. If you were to see us together it wouldn't be surprising to see us matching in some way. And do you want to know the best part of us matching? It's the fact that we didn't plan it, it just sort of happens. We have the same thoughts and opinions, even though we do sometimes clash with each other.

Brittny Valdez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend simply because they care for me equally as much as I care for them, which is a lot. We have such a strong relationship that we can argue over the simplest things and be laughing about something that happened last week two minutes after. They are my shoulder to cry on without failing to be there for me. They are the person I can send a text to in the middle of the night with my thoughts without being a bother. My best friend is everything I'm not, but that is how they complete me. They make me happy when everything else in my life fails to do so.

Mariah Torres, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
As a girl, making friends is difficult, especially while in high school. Girls can be malicious, petty, and flat out rude. And with our hormones on hyper speed because of the male population...yeah, not a good combination. That's why it's rare in finding someone who's on the same page as you. I don't even consider my best friend a "best friend", I consider her a sister. She knows what I'm thinking even before I'm thinking it. We quote every single line from all our favorite movies just like the actors. She lets me know when that cute guy sitting across the table is looking at me. Honestly, I could go on and on and on. But my best friend is my best friend because she knows the good and the bad of myself and doesn't try to change them. She supports me in everything I do, advises me during times of turmoil, and helps me laugh when I make a mistake.

Celeste Tamez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend because he's always there for me when nobody else is. He makes me laugh like crazy, and doesn't judge me for being myself. We just get along really well. He's like the brother I always wanted.

Sydney Cid, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
A best friend is there for you whenever you’re in mourning, whenever you need help on something that you can’t do alone. Especially since they don’t forget about you no matter the cost; as in remembering your birthday or getting you something that you wanted but couldn’t get. These are some of the examples of friends that you would refer to as best friends since they’re the best out of all of them. They help you in need, they follow you in bad situations, and they look after you. Having a best friend would have to be the most important part of life since they’re basically there for you every step of the way.

Zeke Munoz, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend is my best friend for many reasons; we both have a passion for soccer, we've both experienced similar types of life situations, and we both understand each other on a whole other level when no one else can. She is that person in my life that I know I can count on for anything and that will continue to ride by your side as long as possible. My best friend is my best friend because she is all that I need in a best friend.

Justine Ramos, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
Honestly she really is my best friend; I don't think I could ask for a better friend than her. What she does for me is beyond my gratitude for her, she helps me or even does my work for me, she helps me no matter what like get a forgotten item or even huge life decision like college. She laughs with me and gets what I laugh at. The best thing is that we have a relationship which I cherish and I don't want to break that for it is dear to me and to her as well.

David Hernandez III, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend would have to be my big sister because she is always there for me when I need her guidance. We have always been close; we tell each other everything and help each other out with anything. She's also my role-model. She helps me with life's problems as best as she can and teaches me the value of life and family. I'm thankful I can call my big sister my best friend.

Mary Alice Reyes, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
I have several best friends. What makes them my best friends is they won’t judge me and tell the whole world what they think of me. I can trust them with anything and I’m comfortable around them. In my time of need they’re there for me. Whether its family problems or relationship problems. I’m here for them as well. They’re there for me when I need an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on. They’re my best friends and I can count on them for anything.

Lezley Cavazos, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
There is only one person that I can truly call my best friend. She has stuck by me since the first grade, which means that we have been best friends for 10 years. Friends have come and gone but she has never left. She is someone I trust my life and secrets with and know she is always there for me whenever I need something. She is practically my sister and I would take a bullet for her, which I hope she would too. She is my best friend for all the right reasons and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Aisha Zurita, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend and I tell each other everything and we both give each other advice sometimes good or bad. We are best friends because we are super honest to each other and aren't afraid of each other. We might drive each other apart but we love each other. Just like all best friends we fight but we makeup in like five minutes. She knows that I will always be here for her no matter what and she is there for me to.

Michael Mendez, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Dr. Jean Bovee
My best friend embodies the true meaning of friendship and love. He is one of the most amazing people I have ever met and it still amazes me to this day how I am so lucky to have him in my life. He is my best friend because he's one of the only people I can genuinely trust and confide in, and I've never known many people who care like he has and still does, not only for me but for others too. He's funny, and honest, and definitely a rare find. He's made me happy when I thought I couldn't be and he's helped me through a lot. I couldn't ask for a better best friend to have by my side.

Kimberly Rivera, Weslaco High School, Teacher: Edna Camacho
The person who is my best friend has been by my side since pre-k and is a person I can trust. I can tell him anything that I need to get off my chest. If I had never met him, then he and I would have never become best friends, and I wouldn’t have had the chance to write these kinds thoughts about him.

Anthony Zapata, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
My best friend is someone I can tell anything to without worrying that they will stab me in the back or betray me. I tell my best friend almost everything about me, and they don't tell anyone. Being someone's best friend is a big responsibility. Having a best friend is like having a diary, only better, because they give advice about one's problems. My best friend is my best friend because I can trust that he will be by my side no matter what.

Jaden Oliver, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
My best friend is more like a sister to me. We're together 24/7. We argue like sisters, but we don't fight. She's always there for me no matter what the situation may be. She's the one to pick me up when I fall, the one I trust with my life. I can tell her everything and anything, and she won't be so quick to judge; she tries to help in any way possible. She's always the one to make me laugh when I don't want to. She's the one that pushes me to do greater things. She's my best friend because I can be myself with her.

Leah Sanchez, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
The reason my best friend is special is because whatever I tell her she won't say anything to anyone. I can trust her with anything that is valuable to me, and she will give it back the same as I gave it to her. When I'm sad, she always keeps me company, and she keeps me thinking about the positives about my life to keep me happy. Every time there is a problem in my life she is always there for me no matter what. I can trust her more than my mother. She is the only person that I can trust with anything and not lose it.

Jaime Cerda, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
Having a best friend is more than just a person you trust. It is someone that loves you the same every single day despite of everything you do. They are no words to explain you how much I love him and how much I value his friendship. Since I met him, he has changed my life in many ways. He has made me modify many aspects of my life I didn't want to. I think that a best friend is someone who makes you be a better person.

Ashley Rodriguez, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
My best friend is my best friend because I never knew a person who could handle my mood and be okay with it. She is more than my best friend, she is my sister. It doesn't matter if she is mean sometimes, nobody is going to change the way I love her. A lot of people try to separate us, but nobody was successful because she is my sister and my best friend. No person could treat me the way she does.

Eva Valencia, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
In life, people can't just keep secrets. Most people keep them from parents because they're scared to tell them. That's where a true friend comes in. The reason why my best friend is still my best friend is because we have been through thick and thin. The only way you know they're your best friend is if they trust you with their own thoughts. In the end, a friend is just someone you hang out with; a best friend is your true friend.

Tomas Corona, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
My best friend is my treasure because she is always by my side. When I feel like crying, she never leaves me alone. We can talk about anything we want. I can tell her all my secrets and the dumbest things I have ever done in my life. She will always be there for me no matter what. We both have had wonderful times together, and we have learned so much about each other.

Nelson Garza-Cooch, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
My friend and I are like one. When we are together, the sunlight shines bright and birds sing cheerfully. No matter how stormy and rough it gets, we are there for one another, making the air soft and our hearts peaceful. She loves the person I am, and she's always by my side. That's why we’re best friends. She is the stars, and I'm her moon. When I'm in need of help, she guides me through. Our friendship will forever shine bright.

Victoria Vela, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
Having a best friend is fun because you do all sorts of things and enjoy it while the time last. He is who he is, and I will accept it no matter what happens in life. It's like someone you look up to and call him brother. We may argue sometimes, but that's what friendships are for.

Fernando Solis, Sharyland High School, Teacher: Wenndy Pray
My best friend is my best friend because she is always there for me. She doesn’t judge. She also gives me advice that others can’t. I can also trust her with my secrets because she is a true friend. She will always do crazy things with me. That is why my best friend is a close friend.
