YALSA unveils the 2014 Great Graphic Novels for Teens

The Young Adult Library Association has announced its 2014 Great Graphic Novels for Teens, a list of 78 titles that range from history and autobiography to superheroes and mystery.

The finalists were selected by a committee from among 122 nominees recommended for readers ages 12 to 18. From those 55 titles, 10 were singled out for exemplifying “the quality and range of graphic novels appropriate for teen audiences.”

The are:

• Will & Whit, by Laura Lee Gulledge (Amulet Books)
• The Adventures of Superhero Girl, by Faith Erin Hicks (Dark Horse)
• Dogs of War, by Sheila Keenan and Nathan Fox (Graphix)
• Mind MGMT, Vol. 1: The Manager, by Matt Kindt (Dark Horse)
• Rust, Vol. 2: Secrets of the Cell, by Royden Lepp (Archaia)
• March: Book One, by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell (Top Shelf Productions)
• War Brothers: The Graphic Novel, by Sharon McKay and Daniel Lafrance (Annick Press)
• Strobe Edge, Vols. 1-6, by Io Sakisaka (Viz Media)
• Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong, by Prudence Shen and Faith Erin Hicks (First Second)
• Boxers & Saints, Gene Luen Yang (First Second)

“The 2014 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list explores ancient Chinese rebellions, first love, modern day Uganda, futuristic scenarios, civil rights in America and everything in between.” committee chair Tessa Barber said in a statement. “The graphic novels on this list are first rate in the marriage of storytelling and art and have appeal to a wide range of teen readers. The list is designed to be a resource for libraries and teens alike.”
