On Friday, November 1, Youth Pride Inc. will host its annual Awards Dinner and Dance to support Rhode Island’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth. Held at the Providence Biltmore Hotel, the evening, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will also include a Reception and Silent Auction.
The organization’s largest annual fundraiser, this event honors individuals and groups who have provided vital resources that address the needs of youth served at the drop-in center and throughout the community. Recipients this year include Dr. Michelle Forcier, Champions for Marriage Equality, and Michi Olivo. The Honorary Chair for the evening is drag sensation Kitty Litter. Also to be recognized are the many youth who compose the core of Youth Pride Inc.
"This event is a celebration of the individuals and organizations that make our work possible," said Kerri Kanelos, Youth Pride Inc.’s Executive Director. "Our Awards Dinner is a special occasion when we bring the youth we serve and our supporters together to recognize the impact we have made."
Proceeds support the organization’s mission to provide a safe space, programs and services for youth and young adults impacted by gender identity and sexual orientation expression. Youth Pride’s work has expanded to address the many incidences of bullying and cyberbullying against gay youth.
Fundraising at this year’s event is more critical than ever as the economic climate continues to have an effect to funding opportunities. Yet the need for services continues to grow.
Youth Pride’s drop-in center serves about 750 youth each year. About 40 to 50 youths come into the drop-in center each day.
As Kanelos explains: "We continue to serve youth who, in many cases, have nowhere else to go. With limited resources, we are able to offer meaningful programs that provide a wide range of social services."
