JTConnect gets teens involved in social action

GREATER HARTFORD – Making a difference is one cornerstones of Jewish Teen Learning Connection’s (JTConnect) new monthly program called “JTCares.” Teens in grades 8 through 12 meet for a series of community service opportunities held once a month on Sunday afternoons. Located throughout the community, teens meet from 1 – 4 p.m. for lunch and learn followed by a social action project.

The year began by focusing on the Jewish response to homelessness. Teens met at The Underground in Bishops Corner to have some lunch and hear from participants of “Faces of Homelessness”, a program of Hands on Hartford. They got to know these extraordinary presenters who themselves have had experience with homelessness. Following the presentation, teens traveled to “Build-A-Bear Workshop” where they created special gift bears for children who are in transitional housing at “My Sister’s Place” in Hartford. The bears were put into cardboard, portable homes that were filled with travel-sized toiletry items donated by the teens.

JTCares is for teens who want to “give something back” and who yearn to be part of something bigger than themselves. Incorporating their energy and idealism, JTCares marries teens’ intellectual and spiritual curiosity with their volunteerism. The program allows Jewish teens to develop and apply knowledge and skill to real life challenges using the community as their classroom. JTCares raises social awareness and fosters civic responsibility. Community service certificates are issued at the end of each program.

Sessions include lunch, learning and community service project. Locations vary. The cost is $36 per session, $180 for 6 sessions, or $220 for all 8 sessions. For more information, contact the JTConnect office at 860-727-6110 or visit our website at www.jtconnect.org.

JTConnect is a learning and social community that offers a rich experience for teens, enhancing their connection to Jewish heritage, traditions and values. The program is designed for students in 6th through 12th grades. Synagogue membership is not required.
